HISTORY OF SHOES – THE EVOLUTION OF HEELS, SOLES AND VAMPS
![]() | It is quite interesting to see the changes that have come upon shoes throughout the years. Just like everything and everyone else in this world, there is also a history and evolutionary process for shoes. Just like with clothing, one can tell a lot about which period a person comes from by simply looking at his footwear. The very first shoes ever created by mankind were made from indigenous materials. The earliest humans lived a nomadic and primitive lifestyle. They had none of the technologies, materials and knowledge about shoemaking that we have now. Even so, they later realized the importance of keeping one’s feet protected from the elements. Our earliest ancestors made do with alternatives such as wrapping animal skins on each ComfortableFoot and tying them up on the ankles. Centuries later when communities and civilizations were formed, the necessity for shoes became more than what the old animal skins could provide. The earliest shoes during the Middle Ages were called turn shoes. They are practically wetted from whole leather and “turned” or flipped inside-out. In Europe, they used to create wooden shoes. Hardly comfortable shoes, but they are still considered as traditional footwear in countries like the Netherlands and France. Later, whole-leather and whole-wood footwear gave way to shoes made from a combination of these two materials, plus cotton fabric and fur. During the Regency period the shoes made for royals and the gentility were all very detailed and flamboyant. Pointed shoes (for both men and women) became very popular during this time. These ostentatious designs became simpler and more subdued during the contemporary period. At present, shoes are no longer limited to leather, wood and fabrics. We now also use plastics, metals and rubber. Every now and then though, a fad will erupt that is very reminiscent of the older versions—hence the immense popularity of gladiator sandals and French heels among the women of today.
